Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam Filling

At Aerni Dental in Strongsville, we believe in offering patients the most appropriate dental solutions based on their unique needs—and sometimes, that means recommending an amalgam filling. Commonly referred to as “silver fillings,” amalgam restorations have stood the test of time as one of the most durable and cost-effective ways to treat tooth decay, especially in the back teeth.

Dr. William Aerni has decades of experience restoring smiles and preserving natural teeth. If you’ve been told you have a cavity, our team will walk you through all your treatment options, including whether an amalgam filling may be the right choice for your situation.

What Are Amalgam Fillings?

Amalgam fillings are made from a combination of metals—primarily silver, tin, copper, and about 50% elemental mercury by weight. This mercury binds the other metals into a stable, long-lasting material that hardens quickly and stands up to the intense pressure of chewing.

While amalgam is silver-colored and more visible than tooth-colored materials like composite resin, it offers significant advantages in certain clinical situations. At Aerni Dental, we typically recommend amalgam for molars or areas that are hard to keep dry during treatment, where its durability and ease of placement make it a practical solution.

When Might Dr. Aerni Recommend an Amalgam Filling?

Dr. Aerni considers several factors when recommending the best filling material for a tooth. Amalgam may be recommended when:

  • A cavity is large or located in a back tooth: These areas endure the most pressure from chewing, and amalgam is incredibly strong and long-lasting.
  • Moisture control is difficult: Amalgam doesn’t require a perfectly dry environment to set properly, making it ideal for deep cavities or patients with excess saliva.
  • You’re on a budget: Amalgam is generally less expensive than composite fillings, and it’s often covered at a higher percentage by dental insurance.
  • The patient is a child or has special needs: Because amalgam hardens quickly and can be placed in a single visit, it’s often ideal for young children or patients who have difficulty sitting still.
  • There is a high risk for further decay: Patients with multiple cavities or a history of rapid tooth decay can benefit from amalgam’s durability and longevity.

Every treatment decision at Aerni Dental is made in collaboration with the patient. If you prefer a tooth-colored filling or have concerns about amalgam, we’ll explore all your options together.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

If Dr. Aerni recommends an amalgam filling, the procedure is quick and straightforward—typically completed in a single visit:

  1. Diagnosis and Planning: Using digital X-rays and a gentle visual exam, we confirm the presence of decay and determine the most effective treatment.
  2. Numbing the Area: A local anesthetic ensures you feel no pain during the procedure.
  3. Removing Decay: Dr. Aerni uses precise instruments to remove the decayed portion of your tooth.
  4. Filling the Cavity: The amalgam is mixed and packed into the cleaned-out cavity, then shaped and polished to restore your bite.
  5. Checking Your Bite: Before you leave, we ensure your bite feels natural and comfortable.

You’ll be able to return to work, school, or normal activities right away. We do recommend waiting a few hours for the filling to harden fully before eating anything sticky or crunchy on that side.

Aftercare and Longevity

Amalgam fillings can last 10 to 15 years—or even longer with good care. After the procedure, you may experience some mild sensitivity or soreness, but this typically subsides quickly. At Aerni Dental, we’ll provide clear aftercare instructions, and we’re always here if you have any concerns following your visit.

To keep your filling in great shape:

  • Brush and floss daily
  • Avoid chewing hard objects (like ice or pens)
  • Visit Dr. Aerni regularly for cleanings and checkups

We’ll continue to monitor your filling at future visits to ensure it remains intact and that no new decay develops around it.

Is Amalgam Safe?

Yes. Despite concerns over its mercury content, dental amalgam has been extensively studied and is considered safe by major health organizations, including the American Dental Association (ADA), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

That said, amalgam may not be recommended for certain individuals—such as those with known mercury allergies, women who are pregnant, or patients with specific medical conditions. Dr. Aerni always considers your full medical and dental history when determining the safest, most effective treatment.

Alternatives to Amalgam Fillings

For patients who prefer a more aesthetic solution, Dr. Aerni also offers tooth-colored composite fillings, which blend in naturally with your smile. These fillings are ideal for front teeth or more visible areas of the mouth and are often preferred for cosmetic reasons. We’ll help you weigh the pros and cons of each material based on your priorities.
