    Does Your Child Need Braces?

Did you know that 75% of all kids have some type of problem with their adult teeth that causes them to need braces? These problems vary from too much space, crooked teeth, too little space, etc. Also, did you know that many dentists are now offering orthodontic care? That is the case, and has been the case for the last 12 years, for Dr. Aerni in Strongsville, OH. In our last blog post, Dr. Aerni discussed Tip-Edge brackets, their advantages, and why it is his preferred orthodontic technique. You can read it here. Orthodontic Care Strongsville

Dr. Aerni takes a look at what some of the leading causes are for the need for orthodontic care amongst kids. These causes include the following:

    • Cross Bite – This occurs when the upper and lower arch width are not the same. This problem may cause some deviation in facial form. If this problem is not corrected early enough, at 6-8 years old, it can cause the face and jaw to grow abnormally.
    • Deep Bites – A deep bite occurs when the upper anterior teeth overlap the lower anterior teeth. When biting down, the lower anterior of the teeth will not be visible at all for the patient. This is the most common cause of severe tooth wear and Temporal Mandibular disorders later in life. Tip edge orthodontics corrects this problem effectively. There is no need to use orthopedic appliances like the Herbst MARA or head gear.
    • Overbite – When the upper jaw extends further than the lower jaw an overbite occurs. This is caused when the upper jaw is overgrown, the lower jaw in under-grown, or a combination of these two conditions.
    • Underbite – An underbite occurs when the lower jaw extends further than the upper jaw, and causes the bottom teeth to be in front of the upper teeth.
    • Spacing – A spacing issue may occur for many of various reasons, including teeth that are too small, missing teeth, or thumb sucking as a small child.
    • Crowding – Crowding occurs when the teeth do not have enough room to properly come out of the gum. This is treated by using an expander which can allow for the avoidance of surgery.

    Why Choose Tip-Edge Brackets?

Orthodontics have evolved in the last several years. Due to this, many different treatment options are available in the marketplace, including straight wire braces and Tip-Edge brackets. Which system a dentist or orthodontist decides to use is dependent on what system they had training with, and what they feel can offer their patients the best results esthetically and orthopedically.

Dr. Aerni believes that Tip-Edge brackets best fit this criteria. To Dr. Aerni, Tip-Edge brackets offer his patients the best results, use high quality materials, and are affordable. Additionally, Tip-Edge brackets require less appointments and time in the chair, meaning you spend less overall time in our office.

Below, Dr. Aerni lists some of the many advantages of Tip-Edge brackets:

    1. Bite corrections can begin sooner in treatment than with straight wire.
    2. More vertical control.
    3. Changes (both dental and skeletal) occur with relatively light force, 1-3 ounces, in comparison to straight wire braces at 8 ounces.
    4. Easier to move your teeth by tipping them and uprighting the root.
    5. Less anchorage is needed, eliminating the need for external anchorage like head-gear, or other intraoral orthodic devices.
    6. Uses few wires and demands less bending of wires.
    7. Less bulky, making proper dental hygiene easier to achieve.
    8. Fewer appointments, saving you valuable time! Appointments are at 8 week intervals vs 4-6 week intervals, with straight wire.

Keeping Your Mouth Healthy When You Have Braces

Dr. Aerni wants everyone to have a happy mouth. In order for your mouth to be happy, it needs to be clean, healthy, and beautiful. If you are receiving orthodontic care, especially traditional braces or Tip Edge orthodontics like Dr. Aerni offers, they will become a part of you over the course of your treatment. Due to this, it is important that you take proper care of your braces to ensure they remain effective and clean.

Unfortunately, braces can make keeping your teeth clean and healthy is a little bit more difficult. After all, germs, bacteria, and food particles have many more places to hide throughout your mouth!

While it is more difficult to keep your mouth healthy and happy, it is not impossible for orthodontic patients to do so! Below, Dr. Aerni outlines a few steps you can take to ensure that your mouth remains healthy throughout your treatment.

Step 1: Ditch your manual toothbrush for an electric brush.

    Orthodontic Care Strongsville

An electric toothbrush will help to make up for the difficulties introduced by the brackets and wires in your mouth. Removing as much plaque and tartar from your mouth as possible is imperative in maintaining a healthy mouth An electric toothbrush is your best bet to maximize what you are removing from your teeth.

NOTE: Dr. Aerni believes so much in the importance of keeping your mouth clean, and the advantages offered by an electric toothbrush, that he gives all of his orthodontic patients a free Sonicare toothbrush.

Step 2: How you brush matters.

Even if you are brushing with an electric toothbrush, your technique is extremely important. When you are brushing your top teeth, you must angle your toothbrush downwards so that the plaque and tartar are easily removed. Likewise, on your bottom teeth, you need to angle your brush upwards. Additionally, you should brush each tooth for a minimum of ten seconds, and focus on areas where your brackets are connected to your teeth.

    Step 3: Brush more often.

Instead of the recommended twice per day, you should brush after each meal you eat. Brushing after you eat a meal will ensure that you are removing food particles from your mouth before they can become an issue.

Step 4: Use products that contain fluoride.

When choosing a toothpaste and mouthwash, make sure to select a brand and product that contains fluoride. Fluoride helps to strengthen your tooth enamel and avoid cavities.

Step 5: You still need to floss.

Flossing can be a pain, especially with a mouth full of wires and brackets. However, it is important to floss and remove particles of food from between your teeth and braces. Flossing is the best way to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout your treatment.

Step 6: Wear a mouthguard while playing sports.

Dr. Aerni always recommends wearing a mouthguard while participating in sports. However, when you have braces, it becomes even more important to wear a one to protect your braces and your teeth.

Step 7: Stay away from certain foods.

You hear this all the time from your dentist or orthodontist, but, nonetheless, you need to stay away from hard candies, suckers (especially those caramel apple ones), chewy candies, and corn on the cob! If you eat these foods, and your brackets or wires break, your braces will no longer do their job properly until fixed. (More on the foods you can eat with braces below.)

Step 8: Be attentive to your braces.

If you have a wire that breaks, or brackets that have become loose, it is important schedule an appointment to get these problems corrected ASAP.

What Can I Eat With Braces?

Many new orthodontic patients wonder, “What can I eat with braces?” New braces can be a challenge to get used to. When they are first put on, your mouth may be experiencing some soreness. Food and Your Braces

    For New Braces:

    • Cold liquids that don’t stain teeth.
    • Liquid foods like soups, yogurts, and applesauces.
    • Easy to chew solid foods like eggs.
    • Cold treats like ice cream and soft popsicles.

    Eat:

    • Easy to chew meats, fully cooked.
    • Most dairy products like cheese.
    • Soft fruits like bananas, melons, and berries.
    • Non-crusty baked goods like bread and muffins.

    Avoid:

    • Hard, crunchy fruits (unless you cut them up).
    • Beverages that stain teeth if you can’t brush right after.
    • Corn on the cob and popcorn.
    • Hard or sticky candies like caramels or gum.

The “Eat” and “Avoid” sections are good guidelines for the whole time that you have braces on. The “For New Braces” section should be followed for as long as you are experiencing pain or sensitivity. Talk to your orthodontist. They may be able to give you some personalized recommendations.

If you worry that you will be missing out on some healthy but crunchy fruits and vegetables, you will not have to give them up entirely. Cook your vegetables until they are softened enough to eat. Vegetable soup is always a good option. Fruits can be blended into smoothies. Just because you have braces does not mean that you cannot eat healthy foods.
