Wisdom About Wisdom Teeth
Dr. William Aerni
Horror stories about the pain and procedures that accompany having wisdom teeth removed are not uncommon.  Many people have their wisdom teeth removed at a young age, but the truth of the matter is that wisdom teeth don’t have to be removed unless they are impacted or are at risk of becoming impacted.  This is not something that should be taken lightly because it can have serious health effects.  A tooth is impacted when bone or another tooth is blocking it from erupting, causing other teeth to shift.  This will lead to additional dental work in the future.

Some symptoms of an impacted wisdom tooth include:

  • Bad breath and/or bad taste in the mouth
  • Pain and/or difficulty opening mouth
  • Pain and swelling around the tooth
  • Ulcers in the mouth
  • Swollen glands
  • Earache

If you show signs of any of the above symptoms, visit your dentist immediately.  It is important that the impacted tooth is removed to ensure that no other teeth are damaged.  If the tooth is left without treatment it can lead to crooked teeth, cavities due to overcrowding, and even lock jaw.  Having regular X-rays and dental checkups will ensure that any problems are caught early on and can be treated before causing any further damage.
