In our previous blog post, Dr. Aerni continued a discussion on tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity is caused by many things including injury and exposed root dentin. Exposed root dentin can be the result of many different things. These things include the following:

Poor brushing technique – Many people think that if they brush with more force, their teeth will be cleaner. However, the only things brushing with more force will do is wear down your tooth enamel and damage your teeth. Unfortunately, wearing down your tooth enamel can cause both sensitivity and an increase in cavities.

Receding gums – If you do not take good care of your teeth and gum disease begins to develop, your gums may start to recede. As your gums recede, the inner part of your tooth that your gums used to cover will become exposed. Most of the time gum recession is a result of poor dental hygiene practices.

Bruxism – If you grind your teeth, either during the day or while you sleep, you will slowly but surely wear your tooth enamel down. After a while, your tooth enamel will be completely worn away and your dentin will become exposed. Bruxism can be characterized by your teeth aching, jaw pain, and frequent headaches.

Health issues – Diseases like acid reflux (GERD) will cause acid to build up in your mouth and eat away at tooth enamel. Along with certain health issues, citrus fruits will cause additional acids to be introduced into your mouth. Brushing your teeth after eating citrus fruits is important. However, you need to wait about 30 minutes before you brush so you do not damage your teeth.

Remember: Your teeth can become sensitive for a variety of reasons. The best way to treat tooth sensitivity is to determine what is causing it. The best way to determine any dental health problems is to maintain routine dental appointments.

Children’s Dental Hygiene | Do You Want Your Child To Brush More?

In our last blog post, Dr. Aerni began a discussion on the dental hygiene habits of children. Unfortunately, one major issue that many parents face is getting their children to brush twice per day for two minutes at a time. In addition to this, it is important that your children are brushing with proper technique! Your dentist can offer some tips on proper brushing technique. Below, Dr. Aerni lists a few tips to help your children brush longer and more often to improve their dental hygiene.

Let your children choose their toothpaste.

It is rare that your children have the opportunity to make a decision for themselves. If you give your children this choice, they will likely take more ownership over the decision, and take more pride in using what they chose. Letting your child pick their toothpaste is good, but make sure they are choosing a brand that will give results, and make sure they are using the proper amount of toothpaste. Remember: Children do not need to use as much toothpaste as adults, as their mouth and teeth are much smaller.

Let your children brush with their stuffed animal or blanket.

Your children have a significant bond with their favorite stuffed animal or blanket. These items provide them with comfort and a sense of normalcy. After all, your children probably sleep with a blanket or stuffed animal, take them in the car, and to grandma and grandpa’s house, so why not let them bring these items while they brush? In addition to providing comfort, stuffed animals spark children’s imagination and may help them brush longer.

Buy your children an electric toothbrush.

Your children probably get bored while they brush. Due to this, they probably won’t want to brush twice per day or for two minutes at a time. However, if you buy your children electric toothbrushes, brushing can become more fun as they get to use something that is “motorized.” Using an electric toothbrush will also help your children make up for poor technique.

Dr. Aerni also recommends introducing music while your children brush. If you reserve one of your child’s favorite songs for brushing time, it will cause them to want to brush more often and longer, so they can listen to one of their favorite tunes!

Gum Disease | The Health of Your Gums

Are your gums in a healthy state or are you suffering from gum disease? This is something that you need to know the answer to, but probably don’t.

Unless you have been diagnosed by your dentist, you probably don’t know if you are suffering from some form of gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) or not. The reason for this, is that periodontal disease does not present many signs or symptoms. The few you can look for include unexplained bleeding while brushing or flossing, and your gums appearing bright red and inflamed.

Dietary Choices That Boost Oral Health

In our previous article, Dr. Aerni provided a list of foods that may damage the your oral health. As promised, Dr. Aerni will now provide a list of foods that will actually boost the health of your mouth. Along with these foods, it is important to remember to implement good care habits like brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash.

1.) Celery:

Keeping your teeth clean, and secreting enough saliva are both critical in keeping your mouth healthy. Due to its texture, celery can clean your teeth as you chew on it. In addition to this, as you chew on celery, it will stimulate your salivary glands and increase your saliva production.

2.) Carrots:Oral Health

Like celery, carrots work to increase your saliva production. As we know, saliva is one of the best defenses against gum disease, tooth decay, and more.

3.) Pineapple:

Pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain. Bromelain is extremely beneficial to your dental health as it works to break up proteins in your mouth and maintain the health of your teeth. In addition to bromelain, pineapples contain many other vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to your overall and oral health.  

4.) Cheese:

There are many factors that make cheese a good dietary choice for the health of your mouth.
