Does Your Dentist Perform Orthodontic Care?

Did you know that 75% of all kids have some type of problem with their adult teeth that causes them to need braces? These problems vary from too much space, crooked teeth, too little space, etc. Also, did you know that many dentists are now offering orthodontic care? That is the case, and has been the case for the last 12 years, for Dr. Aerni in Strongsville, OH. In our last blog post, Dr. Aerni discussed Tip-Edge brackets, their advantages, and why it is his preferred orthodontic technique. You can read it here.Orthodontic Care Stronsgville

Dr. Aerni takes a look at what some of the leading causes are for the need for orthodontic care amongst kids. These causes include the following:

Cross Bite – This occurs when the upper and lower arch width are not the same. This problem may cause some deviation in facial form. If this problem is not corrected early enough, at 6-8 years old, it can cause the face and jaw to grow abnormally.

Deep Bites – A deep bite occurs when the upper anterior teeth overlap the lower anterior teeth. When biting down, the lower anterior of the teeth will not be visible at all for the patient. This is the most common cause of severe tooth wear and Temporal Mandibular disorders later in life. Tip edge orthodontics corrects this problem effectively. There is no need to use orthopedic appliances like the Herbst MARA or head gear.

Overbite – When the upper jaw extends further than the lower jaw an overbite occurs. This is caused when the upper jaw is overgrown, the lower jaw in under-grown, or a combination of these two conditions.

Underbite – An underbite occurs when the lower jaw extends further than the upper jaw, and causes the bottom teeth to be in front of the upper teeth.

Spacing – A spacing issue may occur for many of various reasons, including teeth that are too small, missing teeth, or thumb sucking as a small child.

Crowding – Crowding occurs when the teeth do not have enough room to properly come out of the gum. This is treated by using an expander which can allow for the avoidance of surgery.
