Oral Health | How Can I Eliminate Cavities?

Cavities Strongsville Dentist

Cavities! The word everyone is scared of hearing every time they visit the dentist.

If you have a cavity, this means you need a restoration, and will be at the dentist for longer than you originally planned. It also means some potential drilling and uncomfortable procedures. Unfortunately, if you have a cavity, you have to get them restored. If you don’t, the decay will get worse and cause you to lose more of your tooth, have extreme sensitivity, and cause issues like gum disease and tooth loss. If you lose your tooth, you may require a dental implant to restore your smile!

Do you brush your teeth, floss, use mouthwash, and visit your dentist on a regular basis, but want to do more to prevent cavities? Many of our patients ask use what more they can do to protect themselves against cavities–and this is what we recommend!

1) Use products that contain fluoride

When choosing which type of toothpaste or mouthwash to use, look for a brand/product that contains fluoride. Fluoride helps to remineralize your teeth and strengthen your enamel. Receiving a professional fluoridation treatment could also be advantageous for your tooth enamel.

2) Receive dental sealants

Sealants are most commonly used for children! This is because children are the most susceptible to cavities, due to their dietary choices. However, if an adult is struggling with keeping their teeth cavity free, sealants are definitely an option. Sealants should not replace your hygiene care, but can create an additional barrier between your teeth and the acids and bacteria in your mouth.

3) Drink more tap water

Tap water is better for your dental health than any other kind of water. This is because of water fluoridation. Just like with dental products that contain fluoride, tap water can help to strengthen your enamel.

4) Look for products that contain Xylitol

The most common products that contains Xylitol are certain brands of sugar-free gum. Chewing sugar-free gum is good for your teeth for a couple of reasons. First, it stimulates your salivary glands and causes you to produce more saliva, a natural protector against cavities. Secondly, Xylitol, while a sugar substitute, works directly against sugars in your mouth. Please note that not all sugar-free brands of chewing gum contain Xylitol.

5) Increase your dairy intake

Dairy products are an excellent source of calcium. Additionally, many dairy products contain casein, a protein that strengthens your teeth. Due to containing both casein and calcium, consuming dairy products is a great way to strengthen your teeth!
