Orthodontic Care | Keeping Your Mouth Healthy With Braces

Dr. Aerni wants everyone to have a happy mouth. In order for your mouth to be happy, it needs to be clean, healthy, and beautiful. Unfortunately, for patients who are undergoing orthodontic care, keeping your teeth clean and healthy is a little bit more difficult. After all, germs, bacteria, and food particles have many more places to hide throughout your mouth!

While it is more difficult to keep your mouth healthy and happy, it is not impossible for orthodontic patients to do so! Below, Dr. Aerni outlines a few steps you can take to ensure that your mouth remains healthy throughout your treatment.

Step 1: Ditch your manual toothbrush for an electric brush.

An electric toothbrush will help to make up for the difficulties introduced by the brackets and wires in your mouth. Removing as much plaque and tartar from your mouth as possible is imperative in maintaining a healthy mouth An electric toothbrush is your best bet to maximize what you are removing from your teeth.

NOTE: Dr. Aerni believes so much in the importance of keeping your mouth clean, and the advantages offered by an electric toothbrush, that he gives all of his orthodontic patients a free Sonicare toothbrush.

Step 2: How you brush matters.

Even if you are brushing with an electric toothbrush, your technique is extremely important. When you are brushing your top teeth, you must angle your toothbrush downwards so that the plaque and tartar are easily removed. Likewise, on your bottom teeth, you need to angle your brush upwards. Additionally, you should brush each tooth for a minimum of ten seconds, and focus on areas where your brackets are connected to your teeth.

Step 3: Brush more often.

Instead of the recommended twice per day, you should brush after each meal you eat. Brushing after you eat a meal will ensure that you are removing food particles from your mouth before they can become an issue.

Step 4: Use products that contain fluoride.

When choosing a toothpaste and mouthwash, make sure to select a brand and product that contains fluoride. Fluoride helps to strengthen your tooth enamel and avoid cavities.

Step 5: You still need to floss.

We know that we discussed this in our last blog, but it is very important. If you do not continue to floss, you are at a much higher risk of developing gum disease and cavities in between your teeth.

Orthodontic Care | Oral Care With Braces

If you are receiving orthodontic care, especially traditional braces or Tip Edge orthodontics like Dr. Aerni offers, they will become a part of you over the course of your treatment. Due to this, it is important that you take proper care of your braces to ensure they remain effective and clean.

Below, Dr. Aerni offers several suggestions on how to best take care of your braces:

Remember to floss!

Flossing can be a pain, especially with a mouth full of wires and brackets. However, it is important to floss and remove particles of food from between your teeth and braces. Flossing is the best way to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout your treatment.

Stay away from certain foods.

You hear this all the time from your dentist or orthodontist, but, nonetheless, you need to stay away from hard candies, suckers (especially those caramel apple ones), chewy candies, and corn on the cob! If you eat these foods, and your brackets or wires break, your braces will no longer do their job properly until fixed.

Wear a mouthguard while playing sports.

Dr. Aerni always recommends wearing a mouthguard while participating in sports. However, when you have braces, it becomes even more important to wear a one to protect your braces and your teeth.

Be attentive to your braces.

If you have a wire that breaks, or brackets that have become loose, it is important schedule an appointment to get these problems corrected ASAP.
