What Causes Sensitive Teeth? Advice from the Strongsville Dentist

Sensitive teeth can be a daily source of annoyance, especially in these summer months when there are lots of cold foods. Whether you have one or many of these pesky sensitive teeth, you know the pain. But what causes sensitive teeth?

Good Habits

Some healthy habits may actually be the root of the problem. A few examples are:

  • Mouthwash. While it is good to rinse your mouth out daily, overly acidic mouthwash could be eroding your teeth. Reduce the amount of times per day that you use mouthwash and seek out a rinse suited for sensitive teeth.
  • Eating citric acid. Vitamin C is good for your overall health. When you eat more than the daily recommended dose, though, it could start to wear down your teeth. Limit the amount of strong tomatoes and oranges that you way in a day.
  • A recent teeth cleaning or filling. Temporary teeth sensitivity could be caused by a dental treatment. It normally will dissipate in a number of hours. If it doesn’t, contact your dentist.

Bad Habits:

There are also some unhealthy habits that can painful sensitivity:

  • Aggressive teeth brushing. Brushing your teeth is great, but if it hurts, you’re doing it wrong. Gentle brushing is best for your teeth–and your gums! You can prevent gum recession by using a softer technique when brushing your teeth. Which brings us to our next bullet point…
  • Receding gums. A receding gum line could your root surface. Talk with your dentist if you feel that your gums are receding. A gum graft may be in order.
  • Chewing ice or hard candy. This nervous habit could lead to cracking your tooth. If this habit is a problem for you, try a softer candy or sugar-free gum.
  • Grinding teeth. Teeth grinding could be tough to fix as it is often done while asleep. A mouth guard could help to stop you from grinding away your tooth enamel.
  • Soda. This is just one of many reasons to not drink soda. Soda can cause tooth decay which could corrode enamel. Limit the amount that you drink or quit completely.

Many new orthodontic patients wonder, “What can I eat with braces?” New braces can be a challenge to get used to. When they are first put on, your mouth may be experiencing some soreness. So you may wonder what the right foods are for your braces. Our infographic, Food and Your Braces, will provide you with some basic guidelines for what to eat with braces through the months or years that you have them on.

Food and Your Braces

For New Braces:

  • Cold liquids that don’t stain teeth.
  • Liquid foods like soups, yogurts, and applesauces.
  • Easy to chew solid foods like eggs.
  • Cold treats like ice cream and soft popsicles.

Eat:

  • Easy to chew meats, fully cooked.
  • Most dairy products like cheese.
  • Soft fruits like bananas, melons, and berries.
  • Non-crusty baked goods like bread and muffins.

Avoid:

  • Hard, crunchy fruits (unless you cut them up).
  • Beverages that stain teeth if you can’t brush right after.
  • Corn on the cob and popcorn.
  • Hard or sticky candies like caramels or gum.

The “Eat” and “Avoid” sections are good guidelines for the whole time that you have braces on. The “For New Braces” section should be followed for as long as you are experiencing pain or sensitivity. Talk to your orthodontist. They may be able to give you some personalized recommendations.

If you worry that you will be missing out on some healthy but crunchy fruits and vegetables, you will not have to give them up entirely. Cook your vegetables until they are softened enough to eat. Vegetable soup is always a good option. Fruits can be blended into smoothies. Just because you have braces does not mean that you cannot eat healthy foods.
